How Do You Measure AEO ROI?

How to measure the return on AEO when AI referrals are hard to track: share of voice, citation trends, and the influence of being the recommended answer.

Measure AEO by your presence in AI answers, since that is the thing you can see and influence, then connect it to business signals over time. AI referrals are hard to track perfectly, because a buyer can be influenced without leaving a referral link. So the honest approach combines visibility metrics with the broader lift in qualified demand.

Start with visibility metrics

The most direct measure is whether you are showing up in the answers that matter. Track three numbers against a baseline:

  • Share of voice: how often you are cited compared to competitors on your tracked questions.
  • Citation rate: how often you are cited across those questions overall.
  • Query coverage: how many of your buyer questions return a mention of you.

If these trend up over time, the AEO work is doing its job: you are becoming the answer more often, on more questions, against more competitors.

Be honest about attribution

The hard part is tying citations to revenue. AI referrals do not always carry a clean referral link, and a buyer who reads an AI recommendation may come to you later directly, with no trace pointing back to the AI. In your analytics, much of that influence simply shows up as direct or branded traffic.

So perfect last-click attribution is not realistic here, and any provider claiming it should be questioned. This is similar to other top-of-funnel brand work, where influence is real but hard to pin to a single touch.

The visitors you can trace are worth the effort, though. Semrush found the average AI search visitor converts at 4.4 times the rate of a traditional organic search visitor, because they arrive pre-researched by the AI (Semrush, AI search traffic study).

Connect visibility to business signals

The practical approach is to watch your visibility metrics alongside business signals over the same period: direct traffic, branded search lift (people searching your name after an AI recommends you), demo or trial requests, and where new buyers say they heard about you. Adding "how did you find us" to your intake captures AI-driven word of mouth that analytics miss.

When rising share of voice lines up with rising qualified demand, you have a credible picture of return, even without a perfect click trail.
