SEO works to rank your own pages in search results. AEO works to get your brand cited and recommended inside AI answers. They share a goal, getting found, but they optimize for different things and rely on different signals. You need both: SEO keeps your own pages strong, and AEO works on what others say about you. Here is the clear comparison.
SEO and AEO at a glance
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your pages in search results | Be cited in AI answers |
| Main signal | Backlinks and on-page content | Credible third-party mentions |
| Where the work happens | Mostly on your own site | Mostly off-site |
| The prize | A click to your site | A mention or recommendation |
The core difference
SEO is about your pages ranking in a list of results. The prize is a high position, and clicks follow.
AEO is about being one of the few sources an AI cites when it answers a question directly. There is often no list and no click. The prize is being named in the answer itself.
So SEO optimizes for a ranking, and AEO optimizes for a mention. That is the heart of it.
Different signals
The two also rely on different signals, which is where people get caught out.
SEO leans heavily on your own site: its content, structure, and backlinks. AEO leans heavily on what credible third parties say about you across the web. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found brand web mentions correlated with AI visibility far more than backlinks did, 0.664 against 0.218 (Ahrefs, AI Overview brand correlation study).
And a top Google ranking does not guarantee an AI citation. Ahrefs found only about 12% of AI-cited URLs also rank in Google's top 10 for the same query (Ahrefs, AI search overlap study). AI builds its own pool of trusted sources, separate from the search results page.
Where they overlap
They are not opposites. Your website and its rankings still feed the pool of sources AI draws from, so good SEO supports AEO. A strong, well-indexed site gives the AI more accurate material about you and gives you a better base to build on.
So the relationship is complementary. SEO is mostly on-site work. AEO is mostly off-site work. The strongest brands in AI answers tend to have both in order.
Which should you do?
Both, in most cases. If people search for your category on Google, you want SEO. If they ask AI about it, and increasingly they do, you want AEO. Dropping one to chase the other leaves a gap a competitor will fill.
The simplest way to hold it in mind: SEO keeps your own pages strong, and AEO gets the rest of the web talking about you accurately. You want both working together.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO extends SEO rather than replacing it. Google says the same SEO fundamentals decide whether a page can appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra requirements (Google Search Central, AI features and your website). If your site cannot be crawled and indexed, AI search cannot read it either.
What is changing is where the payoff lands. More of the value now sits in being the cited answer, not the ranked link. So keep your SEO base, then put your growth effort into the off-site mentions that AI engines weigh most.
