A zero-click search is when someone gets their answer directly from a search or AI tool and never clicks through to a website. AI answers are making this the norm, because they reply in full instead of sending you to a page. That changes the goal for brands: being named in the answer matters more than earning a click. Here is what it means and how to adapt.

What zero-click search means

In a classic search, you typed a query, got a list of links, and clicked one. The website got a visitor. In a zero-click search, you get the answer right on the page, or straight from an AI tool, and there is no need to click anything.

Google AI Overviews are a clear example: the AI summary sits at the top and answers the question, so many people never scroll to the links below. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly, and the same thing happens. You get an answer, not a list of sites to visit.

Why it is growing

AI answer engines are built to give one direct answer rather than ten links, which removes the click by design. As more people ask AI instead of searching the old way, more searches end without a visit to any website.

The numbers back this up. SparkToro's 2026 analysis of Similarweb clickstream data found about 68% of Google searches now end without a click to the open web (SparkToro, 2026 zero-click study). That is up from roughly 58.5% of US searches in Semrush's 2024 study (Semrush, zero-click searches).

AI summaries push the click rate down further. Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 real Google searches and found users clicked a traditional result on just 8% of searches with an AI Overview, against 15% without one. Links inside the AI summary itself were clicked on only 1% of those visits (Pew Research Center, July 2025).

Gartner forecast in February 2024 that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as people move to AI chatbots and virtual agents (Gartner press release). That is a forecast, not a fact, but the direction is clear: more answers, fewer clicks.

What it changes for brands

The old goal was the click. The new goal is the mention. If the AI answers without sending a visitor, your win is being one of the brands it names and recommends in that answer.

This is why measuring success by website clicks alone misses the point now. A buyer can read about you in an AI answer, never click, and still come to you later because the AI recommended you. Being in the answer is the visibility that counts.

The clicks that survive are also worth more. Semrush found the average AI search visitor converts at 4.4x the rate of a traditional organic visitor, because they arrive pre-researched (Semrush, AI search traffic study). Fewer visits, but better ones.

How to stay visible in a zero-click world

You get into the answer by being credible on the sources AI builds answers from. That means genuine presence on community sites, reviews, and real coverage, not just a polished homepage.

The work shifts from earning clicks to earning citations. The brands that adapt are the ones the AI reliably names when a buyer asks, which is the closest thing to a default recommendation in your category.
