You can be removed or banned for spammy self-promotion, but not for genuine participation. Reddit communities move fast against obvious ads and link-dropping. The safe approach is to add real value to the discussion and mention your product only where it fits. That is also what gets cited by AI.
What gets you banned
Reddit's Content Policy bans what it calls content manipulation: spam, vote manipulation, and inauthentic engagement. In practice that means dropping links with no context, posting the same promotional message across subreddits, creating accounts just to praise yourself, and ignoring each community's rules. Many subreddits also expect a track record of normal participation first, and some follow the informal 90/10 rule: no more than about one post in ten should be about you or your product.
Cross those lines and removal, or a ban, follows quickly. Reddit's own transparency reports show spam makes up the large bulk of what its admins remove, and most of it is caught automatically. The volunteer moderators are good at spotting the rest.
What stays safe
Genuine participation is a different thing entirely. Answering the actual question, sharing real experience, and mentioning your product where it honestly helps reads as a knowledgeable person contributing, not an ad.
The simple test: would your comment be useful to someone even if they never bought from you? If yes, it belongs. If it only exists to push your product, it does not.
Why this matters for AI visibility
Avoiding bans is only half the reason to do this right. The same genuine content that survives on Reddit is what AI engines cite. Reddit is one of the most-cited sources in AI answers, so a helpful, well-placed contribution can do double duty: it helps the community and it feeds the AI.
Spammy content fails on both counts. It gets removed by Reddit and discounted by AI. Quality is the strategy.
How Cited handles it
The honest version first: no one can promise zero removals, because Reddit and its moderators make the final call, and any promotion that hides its intent deserves to get caught. Cited's mitigation is to not give them a reason. We write for the community first, follow each subreddit's norms, and pace contributions naturally rather than flooding. The goal is content that earns its place, which is what keeps it live and citable.
