If ChatGPT never names your brand, it is almost always because the AI cannot find enough credible, third-party evidence about you on the sources it reads. A great website is not enough on its own. The fix is to build genuine presence on the places AI looks, like community sites, reviews, and credible coverage. Here are the usual causes and what each one takes to fix.
You have little presence on the sources AI reads
This is the most common reason. AI tools build answers mostly from third-party sources, not from your own site. If the conversation about you on places like Reddit, review sites, and news is thin, the AI has little to go on.
An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found brand web mentions correlated with AI visibility far more than backlinks did, 0.664 against 0.218 (Ahrefs, AI Overview brand correlation study). If few credible sources mention you, you stay invisible, no matter how good your product is.
You rank on Google but assume that is enough
A strong Google ranking feels like it should carry over to AI. It largely does not. Ahrefs found only about 12% of AI-cited URLs also rank in Google's top 10 for the same query (Ahrefs, AI search overlap study).
AI builds its own pool of trusted sources, and it looks different from a search results page. You can dominate Google and still be missing from the AI answer.
You are only looking at one engine
Sometimes a brand shows up fine on one tool and not another, which can look like a total absence if you only check one. The platforms overlap surprisingly little, and each favors different sources. Semrush's three-month study of 100 million AI citations found each engine has its own source preferences, and even the same engine can reshuffle its favorites within weeks.
So check ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI together before concluding you are invisible everywhere. You may be weak on one engine and present on another, which tells you where to focus.
Your brand is new with little said about it
If your brand is young, there may simply not be enough out there yet for AI to draw on. This is a cold start, and it is normal. It does not mean AEO will not work, only that you are building from a lower base and it takes longer.
What actually fixes it
The fix matches the cause: get genuine, accurate information about your brand onto the sources AI reads. That means useful contributions in relevant community discussions, credible third-party coverage, and clear, consistent information about what you do across the web.
You cannot fix this by telling ChatGPT your brand is great. The model builds answers from outside evidence it can find and check, so changing the answer means changing that evidence. It is steady work, and it compounds as more credible sources mention you.
