Can't AI Just Detect and Discount Manipulated Content?

AI engines are getting better at filtering low-quality and manipulative content. Why that's good news for genuine content and bad news for tricks.

Increasingly, yes, and that is good news if your content is genuine. AI engines are getting better at spotting and discounting low-quality, manipulative content. Honest, useful content survives these crackdowns because it is what the platforms want to surface. Tricks and fake volume are exactly what gets filtered.

The filters are getting smarter

AI platforms have a strong incentive to avoid being gamed, and they act on it. They re-weight their sources to reduce over-reliance on any one place and to resist manipulation. Google's spam policies are explicit that scaled, manipulative content is spam no matter how it is produced (Google Search Central, spam policies).

A clear example of re-weighting: a Semrush study of more than 100 million citations found ChatGPT's use of Reddit dropped from roughly 60% of responses to around 10% within weeks in late 2025, which Semrush read partly as the platform becoming more resistant to manipulation (Semrush, most-cited domains study).

Why this helps genuine content

If the filters target manipulation, then content built to manipulate is the thing at risk, not content built to help. Accurate, useful, well-placed content is what these systems are trying to find and cite. It tends to survive re-weighting because it is the signal, not the noise.

So a smarter filter is a threat to spam and an advantage to brands doing the work honestly. The better AI gets at filtering, the more the genuine approach pays off relative to the cheap one.

The test for any tactic

Here is a simple way to judge any AEO tactic: does it only work as long as the AI fails to notice it? If yes, it is fragile and will break the next time the platform tightens up. If it works precisely because the content is genuinely good, it holds.

That single test separates a durable strategy from one that is one update away from collapse.

Where to go next
