No, and this is one of the biggest misconceptions. A top Google ranking helps your overall presence, but it does not guarantee an AI citation. AI engines build their own pool of trusted sources, and it looks very different from a Google results page.
The data is clear
Ahrefs studied how AI citations line up with Google rankings and found only about 12% of AI-cited URLs also rank in Google's top 10 for the same query (Ahrefs, AI search overlap study).
Even for Google's own AI Overviews, the overlap is smaller than you would expect. A separate Ahrefs study of 4 million AI Overview URLs, published in March 2026, found only about 38% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the same query, down from roughly 76% in mid-2025 (Ahrefs, AI Overview citations and the top 10).
Why the two are different
Classic search ranks your pages. AI engines assemble answers from the sources they trust most for a given question, which often means community discussions, reviews, and credible coverage, not the page that happens to rank first.
Google explains part of the mechanism itself: its AI features use a query fan-out technique, running multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response (Google Search Central, AI features and your website). The pages cited often come from those related searches, not from the results page for your exact query.
So you can sit at the top of Google and still be missing from the AI answer, because the AI is reading places your ranking does not control.
What this changes
It means a strong ranking is necessary but not sufficient. You still want good SEO, since your site feeds the pool AI draws from. But you also need off-site credibility, the genuine mentions across the web that push you into the AI's set of trusted sources.
Brand mentions are the stronger signal here. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found brand web mentions correlated with visibility in Google's AI Overviews far more strongly than backlinks did, 0.664 against 0.218 (Ahrefs, AI Overview brand correlation study).
